Mathematics and Science Tuition

About Me
I am a mathematics and science tutor offering online lessons via Zoom, as well as in-person sessions for students living near my home in the Guildford area.
I have been tutoring since 2005, supporting hundreds of students studying science and mathematics at local schools and colleges. I hold degrees in Biochemistry and Statistics, and completed my doctorate in Statistical Genetics at UCL. Alongside tutoring, I have worked in academia at the University of Surrey as a medical statistician in psychopharmacology and sleep research, and I continue to lecture in statistical methods for MSc Nutrition and Nutritional Medicine students.
My teaching style is calm, structured, and student-centred. I focus on building understanding, confidence, and strong exam technique, while helping students clearly identify and overcome their problem areas.
I take particular pride in helping students not only improve their results, but also to develop genuine interest and enjoyment in their subjects. For many, this has helped open up new academic and career pathways.
I moved into tutoring because it offered the balance I needed around my family life. It has become a role I genuinely love, and I take great pride in the progress and confidence students gain through it.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy kayaking, skateboarding, snow sports, and travel.

I offer tuition for:

-
GCSE/iGCSE
-
A'levels
in the following subjects:

-
Mathematics
-
Biology
-
Chemistry
-
Physics

I have experience tutoring students from all major exam boards, including Edexcel, AQA, OCR, and WJEC.
Additionally, I have worked with students from local schools such as George Abbot, St. Peters, St. Catherines, Godalming College, Guildford High, Royal Grammar, Gordon's, SJB, Woking College, King Edwards, and more.

I am happy to offer in-person tuition for students who live close-by.
Face-to-face sessions can be particularly helpful for less motivated students, where physical presence and structure can provide extra focus and accountability. For some learners, this environment can make it easier to stay engaged and on task.

Zoom sessions are a highly effective and flexible way to learn, and for many students they work just as well as and often better than in-person tuition.

Students can write directly on the screen while seeing my screen at all times, allowing us to work through problems collaboratively and efficiently. An unexpected advantage of online tuition is that I can clearly see students’ facial expressions throughout the session, which helps me immediately identify confusion or uncertainty, something that is not always possible when sitting side-by-side.

I use a 1 Gb fibre-optic broadband connection that is fully wired to my laptop, ensuring a stable and reliable experience. I also use a Wacom pen tablet, which allows me to write equations, diagrams, and explanations naturally and clearly in real time.

I have been tutoring students online long before it became widespread during the pandemic. One memorable example from 2011 was tutoring a student in Woking whilst I was on holiday in the remote Australian outback. The lodge had an excellent internet connection so we were able to continue sessions.
